In 1989, the 72-year-old artist decamped from his home in Los Angeles to Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert, where he spent his last decade and a half living on a friend’s land and creating sprawling outdoor sculpture installations, assemblages of found materials like bicycles, aluminum trays, beer kegs, and bowling balls.
